What coverages do I need?

In case you're involved in an accident, auto insurance provides financial protection for you and your family. It pays for the damage and injuries caused by the accident and for repairing or replacing your vehicle if it is damaged or stolen.

State Requirements

In most states, you are required to carry auto liability insurance (or post a bond) and provide proof of insurance before you can license your vehicle or renew your driver's license. Washington State is no different. If you are caught driving without insurance, you may have to pay a large fine and have your driver's license suspended.

Most states require drivers to carry minimum liability coverage. In many cases, the required minimum coverage may not be enough to pay for all the damages that result from an accident and the driver will have to pay the additional expenses out of pocket. Our concern is not the small fender-benders in the parking lots, but rather the 2 or 3 plus car pile ups that happen around the Tacoma-Seattle area. This is when it's critical to be covered adequately.

Types of Auto Insurance Coverages

There are many different types of auto insurance coverage's for you to choose from. We will work with you to decide what coverage combinations provide the best protection at a price that fits your budget.

Collision - Pays damages to your own vehicle.
Comprehensive - Pays for losses from fire, theft, storm, etc.
Deductible - The amount of a covered loss you agree to pay.
Bodily Injury - Pays for injury to others when you are at fault.
Property Damage - Pays for property damage when you are at fault.
Medical Payments - Pays for your own or your passenger's medical expenses.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist - Coverage for you if other driver is not insured or is underinsured.

Personal Liability Umbrella

Lawsuits are common today. More and more, juries are awarding very large verdicts. If you accidentally injure someone or damage his or her property, you could be sued. Your homeowners, property and auto policies may provide substantial liability limits, but juries can award damages that exceed those limits.

Farmers Personal Liability Umbrella provides coverage in increments of $1 million. It supplements your present policies to provide additional personal liability protection.

The Umbrella policy goes into affect after the underlying liability limits on your homeowners or auto policy is/are exhausted. Therefore, your policy must have certain limits in order to qualify for an Umbrella policy.

Typically, these are the policy limits that either your auto or homeowners policy needs to have. Please check with us if you have any questions.

Auto Insurance Liability Limits:

$250,000 bodily injury per person

$500,000 bodily injury per occurrence

$100,000 property damage per occurrence

Homeowners Insurance Liability Limits: $300,000

Farmers Personal Umbrella policy can provide the protection you need. Umbrella Liability insurance acts like an umbrella, providing extra protection on top of your Auto and Homeowners Liability policies. Our policy at Farmers is unique! We will provide limits of your policy (both your auto and umbrella policy) if you are injured in an auto accident and the other driver is at fault. Most of the other insurance companies do not have this coverage. We at Farmers think it is very important for your family.

Business and Professional Group Discounts

The following business and professional groups qualify for additional discounts, subject to eligibility guidelines.

In addition to basic auto insurance, consider these optional services to provide added protection for your vehicle:

The Farmers Tow Program (FARMTOW) provides access to roadside assistance at any time of the day or night. Not only does this program provide towing to the nearest qualified repair facility, but it also provides service for "lock out", battery "jump start" and other labor charges performed at the place of your vehicle's disablement.

In most cases, Farmers will be billed directly. How easy is that? The only number you need is 1-800-farmtow. We will find a local company to come out to you and provide the help you need. You don't have to find a phonebook; find an open business that is closest to you or the cash to pay them. We handle all of that.

Auto Rental Service

Farmers Auto Rental Service is a program that quickly provides a rental vehicle for your use after an accident. This network of pre-screened, nationally known, rental car companies will provide free pickup and delivery, direct billing to Farmers and an automatic deposit waiver (deposit waiver is not available in all areas). Auto Rental Service provides service for customers and other parties in an accident for which we have accepted responsibility.

FASGLAS, Glass repair/replacement program

FASGLAS is a national program with over 12,000 glass shops that provide auto and home glass replacement and repair services.

Upon notification of an auto glass claim, Farmers will link you directly with a FASGLAS vendor who will arrange to provide repairs at one of their local glass shops or send a qualified glass replacement/repair technician to your home or work, whichever is convenient for you. For home glass claims, the FASGLAS vendor will arrange for the technician to be dispatched directly to your home. You pay only your deductible. The remainder is billed directly to Farmers.

Customers participating in this program receive a warranty from Farmers as well as the glass service provider. Warranty availability is subject to state and local regulation. We, as your agent, or a claims office, will find a FASGLAS glass repair service near you.

Recreational Vehicles

We can insure your motor home, mobile home, travel trailer, fifth wheel trailer, motor coach, snowmobile, off road vehicle, motorcycle, family boat, or personal watercraft.

ATV's are a frequent problem area as far as claims go. ATV use is not covered under the home policy if it is used off premise. Many/most people do not know this until it is too late.
